Caring for your silk

Yes, your silk may be washed. No need to dry clean unless you want to throw your money away. Hand wash in tepid water with a mild liquid soap or detergent. Spots such as grease or lipstick can be pretreated with a prewash such as “Shout” or “Spray n Wash”. A few items may leave a little color in the rinse water – this is only excess dye from the dying process that did not completely rinse out. Your silk item will not fade. Never, never, never use bleach on your silk! BIG HOLES !!!

To return the soft hand to you silk, add liquid fabric softener to the final rinse. Roll the item in a towel to absorb excess moisture. Iron the silk from the damp state. This works better than trying to steam iron dry silk. Ironing returns the sheen to silk. If your veil has creases from hanging on a hanger or from being folded, steam ironing on the “wool” setting will usually remove them.

Silk wrinkles. So don’t stuff it in a bag and expect it to look good when you pull it out. Fold your silk flat and hang it on a hanger fitted with a cardboard tube. You can usually get used hangers at your dry cleaners for free.
